Fell Terriers
| Fell Terrier are your 'Terriers!' They aren't pedigree, they aren't prized in show circles; but they are there prized by their owners for either the work they do 'on the farm' chasing, catching or challenging wild life; or loved family pets. The term Fell comes from the Fell district..Lake District and hence they are loosely termed Lakelands and sold as Lakelands but very different to the pedigree Lakeland terriers. They are 'rugged' and often bred by travellers; lost by travellers and adverted in local papers by travellers. They are 'longer legged' generally but yes as they aren't bred pedigree to pedigree they can be 'mixed bred' and short legged. Looking through the website your see them and learn to recognise them out on your walks and sadly in the rescue centres and especially on the dog lost website. They are courageous to a fault, can be a little bit too defensive for their owners likes. Not famed to hold back if challenged nor have it all under control if they are in a rush.
Sadly so many of these dogs sit here waiting for their home...and people put their questionnaire in 'must come off lead; must be able to live with 3 cats; we have time off now as we are rearing a family how are they with babies? No don't except to take a good looking Fell Terrier into your home and find you have an all singing all dancing 'pet' They are 'working type' terriers and need to be respected, managed and loved for what they ARE. So yes our questionnaire asks 'a lot of questions' but we really need to know about visiting dogs; age of potential owners and whether there is intent to have a family. Many of our terriers lose their homes and lives because the baby is coming; they can't handle toddlers; for lack of a terrier proof garden. We are looking for 'feet on the floor, sleeve rolled up people..not people that have called in a animal behaviourist 2 weeks into homing because he gets excited when the postman comes. |
